The Perfect 3 Day Weekend in West Virginia

In our opinion, West Virginia is one of the most underrated states in the US, especially if you're craving sweeping mountain views, charming small towns, cozy cabins, and outdoor adventures that feel just the right amount of wild. On our recent 3 day trip to the Mountain State, we hiked among breathtaking landscapes in Dolly Sods, sampled the best pepperoni rolls in the state (for research purposes, of course), explored hidden caves and iconic rock formations, and capped things off with a whitewater rafting trip in one of America's newest national parks. Whether you're planning your first visit or just need a reason to fall back in love with West Virginia, this itinerary is packed with unforgettable stops, scenic drives, and local eats. And if you’re looking for the perfect place to homebase for your West Virginia adventures, look no further than Golden Anchor Cabins. Each of their authentic log cabins is designed specifically for couples and features a full kitchen, private hot tub, gas-log fireplace, custom tile shower for two, and more. We stayed in their Serenity Cabin and were truly impressed!

Oh! And if you want to see what our weekend in West Virginia was like, watch our “Weekend in West Virginia” video on YouTube, where we share our experience doing much of what is mentioned in this itinerary!

Now… Let’s dive into the perfect 3 day weekend in West Virginia!

Day 1: A Wild and Wonderful Welcome

8:15 AM – Coffee and Breakfast at TipTop

130 State Hwy 32, Thomas, WV

Kick off your West Virginia adventure with a handcrafted coffee and light breakfast at TipTop, a cozy café tucked into the artsy mountain town of Thomas. This spot is known for its espresso drinks, locally sourced ingredients, delicious baked goods, and inviting vibe. Don’t miss the bagel sandwiches or frittata if they’re on the menu! My personal favorite was the Strawberry Cream Cheese Pastry! Mmm… So good!

9:15 AM – Pick Up Pepperoni Rolls & Picnic Supplies

16105 Appalachian Hwy, Thomas, WV

Just down the road, swing by Mountain Top Convenience to grab what many call the best pepperoni rolls in the state. This beloved snack, soft bread stuffed with spicy pepperoni and (most of the time) mozzarella cheese, is a West Virginia classic. For a fun taste test, try a few versions! A good starting point is the classic (pepperoni), the classic with cheese (pepperoni & mozzarella), and the classic with cheese and sauce (pepperoni, mozzarella, & marinara). We’ve also heard that the banana pepper pepperoni roll is a local favorite as well. In addition to the local delicacies, you'll also want to grab drinks, chips, crackers, cookies... Whatever you want for your picnic scheduled for the afternoon!

11:00 AM – Bear Rocks Preserve Hike at Dolly Sods

Enter through the South Entrance for the most scenic drive

Forest Rd 75, Davis, WV

After a winding drive up Forest Road 75, you’ll arrive at Bear Rocks Preserve in the Dolly Sods Wilderness, a high-elevation plateau unlike anywhere else in West Virginia. Part of the Monongahela National Forest, this wild, windswept landscape is filled with stunted spruce trees, heath meadows, and wide-open rock outcrops that look more like southern Canada than Appalachia. The Bear Rocks Preserve area offers one of the most accessible and scenic hikes in the region. Follow the Bear Rocks Trail for about a mile roundtrip to reach panoramic views that stretch across multiple states on a clear day. The trail is mostly flat with a few rocky sections and makes for a peaceful, otherworldly walk. Just be prepared for strong winds and sudden weather shifts, even in summer!

12:15 PM – Picnic at Bear Rocks Overlook

Forest Rd 75, Davis, WV 26260

After enjoying a nice scenic hike, you'll probably have worked up an appetite. Hopefully, you scoped out the perfect picnic spot on your hike; if not, it's ok. Just grab your picnic supplies, find a spot along the cliff's edge (not too close), and settle in for a scenic picnic right on the rocks. The views stretch out for miles with endless layers of mountains and sky, and the exposed setting gives you a front row seat to Dolly Sods' raw beauty. Unpack your pepperoni rolls and snacks, breathe in the crisp mountain air, and enjoy a peaceful break surrounded by one of West Virginia's most breathtaking backdrops.

1:30 PM – Smoke Hole Caverns Tour

8290 N Fork Hwy, Cabins, WV

Step underground into a world of natural wonder at Smoke Hole Caverns, where stalactites, stalagmites, and rich legends fill the hour-long guided tour. This spot is part geology lesson, part folk tale, and the kitschy gift shop, which happens to be the largest in the state, is a fun stop if you're into local souvenirs.

3:15 PM – Seneca Rocks (Photo Op or Optional Hike)

WV-28, Seneca Rocks, WV

Next up is one of West Virginia’s most iconic natural landmarks: Seneca Rocks. Towering fins of white quartzite rise dramatically above the valley, making this a must-see. If time and energy allow, hike the Seneca Rocks Trail (3 miles roundtrip) to a stunning overlook. Otherwise, a quick photo op and stop by the Seneca Rocks Discovery Center makes for a great visit.

4:00 PM – Still Hollow Spirits Distillery Tour and Tasting

128 Stink Run Rd, Harman, WV

Take a turn off the beaten path for a tour and tasting at Still Hollow Spirits, a small batch distillery tucked away in Harman, WV. Known for their traditional techniques and grain-to-glass whiskey, this stop offers a laid-back experience with serious flavor. Our personal favorites were the Maple Syrup Barrel Rested Whiskey, the Gin, and the Bourbon Barrel Aged Maple Syrup, but to be honest, everything we tasted was wonderful! Even the creative spirits like the Big Timber Distilled IPA and Ginseng Spirits!

5:30 PM – Freshen up at Golden Anchor Cabins

Nautical Way, Canaan Heights, WV

Unwind and settle into your cabin at Golden Anchor Cabins, nestled right in the heart of the Canaan Valley. Whether you're here for the romantic vibes, private hot tub, or mountain views, this is the perfect home base for your West Virginia weekend. Take some time to relax before heading off to dinner.

7:00 PM – Dinner at Alpine Lodge and Restaurant

Rt 33, Wymer, WV

After a quick freshen up and relaxation, make the short drive to Alpine Lodge and Restaurant. This unassuming eatery, located in the Lodge in Alpena (AKA Alpine Motel... Seems that no one knows the official name of this place, tbh), offers hearty Appalachian fare in a rustic setting. As one patron put it... "5-star food and service in 3-star atmosphere". Every dish that we tried was truly outstanding. Chef John and his team have done a spectacular job revitalizing this historic establishment and have created something special that's worth adding to your West Virginia itinerary!

9:00 PM – Wind Down at Golden Anchor

End the night with a soak in your private hot tub under the stars or a movie by the fireplace. After a full day of hiking, tasting, and exploring, there’s no better way to relax than this.

Day 2: Waterfalls, Small Towns, and Mountain Charm

8:15 AM – Breakfast at Milo's Café and Restaurant

454 William Ave, Davis, WV

Start your day with breakfast at Milo's Café and Restaurant, a local favorite in Davis known for its warm hospitality and hearty morning fare. From fresh-brewed coffee to generous breakfast plates, this spot offers a cozy atmosphere and a great start to the day. It's a beloved community hub and a must-visit while you're in the area.

9:30 AM – Blackwater Falls State Park

1584 Blackwater Lodge Rd, Davis, WV

Head to Blackwater Falls State Park, one of West Virginia's crown jewels. The amber colored waters of the Blackwater River plunge over a 57-foot cascade surrounded by lush forest, making this one of the most photographed spots in the state. The "black" color comes from tannins in the red spruce and hemlock needles.

Must-see highlights include:

• Blackwater Falls Overlook

• Elakala Trail – an easy half-mile round-trip trail with beautiful, smaller falls

• Falls of Pendleton via Pendleton Trace Trail – about 1.4 miles roundtrip

This park is incredibly accessible and great for quick scenic hikes, photography, or just soaking in the beauty of the Allegheny Mountains.

Sign for "Blackwater Falls State Park" with "almost heaven" text. Waterfalls and lush forest background. Elakala Trail sign on gravel path.

12:00 PM – Explore Downtown Thomas

278 State Hwy 32, Thomas, WV

After chasing waterfalls, head into the artsy town of Thomas. Its compact downtown is filled with galleries, shops, cafes, and restaurants, all set against a charming historic backdrop. Take some time to wander through the shops and streets, grab a souvenir, and enjoy the relaxed mountain town vibe.

Notable Stops:

• McClumsy – Outdoor clothing and accessories with a local flair

• Ella & Company – Home goods store offering unique, local items and gifts

• BLOOM – Boutique shop featuring local artist-made goods

• Happy & More Bakery & Cafe – Cafe offering freshly baked treats, coffee, and sandwiches

• Macy Lou's Gourmet Apple Co. – Local confectionery shop offering delicious Granny Smith Apples covered in caramel, dipped in chocolate, and rolled in a topping of your choice.

1:15 PM – Lunch at Siriani’s Café

474 William Ave, Davis, WV

Just a short drive away in Davis, grab lunch at Siriani’s Café, a longtime favorite for pizza, pasta, and Italian comfort food with a mountain twist. The atmosphere is casual and cozy, perfect after a morning of hiking and exploring.

Pizza on a plate, Greek salad with dressing cup, and menus featuring appetizers and pizza options in a cozy restaurant setting.

2:30 PM – Dessert at The Ice Cream Shop

451 William Ave, Davis, WV 26260

Head just across the street to The Ice Cream Shop for a sweet treat. Whether you're a fan of hand-dipped classics or just want a scoop to stroll with, this is a must-stop after lunch in Davis. We had little to no expectations for this place, but let me tell you... This is some of the best ice cream we've ever had! They make every bit of it on site in their creamery, which is located in the basement of the shop. We recommend ordering the flight that allows you to pick 4 different flavors (one scoop each). We even added a 5th scoop because it's just that good! Our favorite flavors were the Triple R (the 'R' stand for Resse's), Lemon Poppyseed Cookie, Lavender Honey, and Mornin' Sunshine (coffee ice cream), but to be honest, out of the 8 or so flavors that we sampled, I would have been happy with any one of them! So good!

3:30 PM – Couples Massage at Golden Anchor Cabins

After a full morning of outdoor adventure and sightseeing, return to your cabin for a relaxing couples massage, offered right onsite at Golden Anchor Cabins... The perfect midday reset. You’ll feel refreshed and recharged for your evening plans.

6:30 PM – Dinner at Elender’s Global Cuisine

16454 Appalachian Hwy, Thomas, WV

Enjoy dinner at Elender’s, a cozy spot offering locally inspired dishes with international flair, with a heavy Asian influence. The rotating seasonal menu showcases West Virginia’s culinary creativity, from locally raised meats to fresh Appalachian vegetables. It's a bit elevated without losing that warm, small town feel.

Sign for Elender's Global Cuisine by a roadside, with a green "Open" flag. Cozy interior with wood decor, nachos, and mac 'n' cheese dishes.

8:00 PM – Drinks and Live Music at The Purple Fiddle

96 State Hwy 32, Thomas, WV

Wrap up your evening with a drink and some live tunes at the Purple Fiddle, a legendary local venue that hosts bluegrass, folk, and Americana musicians from across the country. Grab a local cider or craft beer and soak in the vibes. This is where West Virginia’s creative spirit really shines.

Live band on stage at The Purple Fiddle, Thomas WV. Sign reads "Live Music Lives". Cozy venue with string lights, guitars, and drum set.

10:30 PM – Wind Down at Golden Anchor Cabins

Head back to your cabin, pour a glass of wine, and unwind. Whether you're curled up by the fireplace or back in the hot tub, you'll sleep like a rock after a full day of fresh air and good food.

Day 3: Rafting the New River Gorge

8:15 AM – Breakfast in the Cabin

Your final full day starts slow and peaceful with breakfast in your Golden Anchor Cabin. Whether it’s a hot cup of coffee on the deck or a cozy meal cooked in your kitchen, it’s the perfect way to ease into the morning before heading off to one of the most adrenaline filled parts of the trip.

Breakfast spread with French Toast, bacon, scrambled eggs, fruit, syrup, and orange juice. Red plates and warm wood table setting.

9:15 AM – Depart for ACE Adventures

1 Concho Road, Oak Hill, WV

Hit the road for a scenic drive south to ACE Adventure Resort near New River Gorge National Park. The trip takes about three to three and a half hours, so grab snacks, cue up your favorite playlist, and enjoy the winding mountain views as you make your way toward one of the oldest rivers on the continent.

Note: If you prefer to avoid the long drive, consider booking a trip with Blackwater Outdoor Adventures on the Cheat River. This drive is a short, 45-minutes from Golden Anchor Cabins, but beware that the operational season on the Cheat River is much more limited than the New River, which typically runs from April to October. So, if you're visiting before May or after July, you'll need to contact Blackwater Outdoor Adventures for availability.

2:00 PM – Whitewater Rafting in the New River Gorge

1 Concho Road, Oak Hill, WV

Arrive just in time for an afternoon of whitewater rafting in the New River Gorge, a true bucket list experience in West Virginia. With its mix of calm pools and Class III to V rapids, the Lower New River is the perfect stretch for both first timers and seasoned rafters. ACE Adventures provides everything you need, including gear, guides, and safety training. Once you're on the river, it's all about crashing through waves, floating past sandstone cliffs, and taking in the wild beauty of one of America’s newest national parks. Expect to get wet, laugh a lot, and maybe even jump off a rock or two if your guide offers the chance. CLICK HERE to book your tickets!

7:00 PM – Dinner at Secret Sandwich Society

103 Keller Ave, Fayetteville, WV

After conquering the rapids, head into Fayetteville for dinner at Secret Sandwich Society, a local favorite known for its inventive sandwiches, craft beer, and laid back vibe. The menu is packed with flavor, featuring options like the FDR with roast beef and horseradish mayo or the Eisenhower with fried chicken and pickled red onions. Don’t skip the hand-cut fries or the house-made pickles. It's the perfect reward after a day of adventure.

8:30 PM – Drive Back to Golden Anchor Cabins

Once you’ve dried off and filled up, it’s time to make the return trip north to your cabin. The drive takes about three to three and a half hours. It’s a long haul after a long day, but worth it for one more peaceful night in the mountains. Pro tip: keep your comfiest clothes and some snacks in the car.

Day 4: Check Out and Heading Home

11:00 AM – Check Out of Golden Anchor Cabins

After one last slow morning at Golden Anchor Cabins, it's time to pack up and head home. Sip a final cup of coffee on the porch, take in the fresh mountain air, and maybe even start planning your next trip back. Whether you spent your weekend hiking rugged trails, rafting wild rivers, or simply soaking in the peace and quiet, we can pretty much guarantee you’ll be leaving with a new appreciation for the Mountain State.
